Because the original image may have many more than 256 colors, converting to
GIF (by definition) loses these colors; if you start with 256 or fewer
colors, GIF can indeed be lossless. GIF is optimized for Web browser
support, not printing, and thus has the 256-color limit. Where "true" color
is important, as is the case for photographs rather than screenshots, TIFF
(for print) or JPEG (for online and possibly for print) are better choices
because they either lose no color information (TIFF) or lose an amount of
color and resolution when you specify the compression level (JPG).
