At the place I used to work, we put each chapter in a separate file, with consecutive/meaningful file names: 01Intro, 02SysAdmin, 03ShopFloor, and so on. Putting the number first kept them in table of contents order. Using leading zeros kept chapter 11 from coming before chapter 2, and the rest of the name was more or less the actual chapter name. And anyone could download only the section they needed. A lot of customers seemed to like this better than a single huge file

Here's an interesting question I am wrestling with: What is the best way
to distribute the manual for our software in an electronic format?

The requirements are:
That the clients must be able to alter the source document (so PDF is
out).
It has to be accessible for people using different versions of Word.
It has to be distributed on the same CD as the application and be easy
enough to access for an "ordinary person."
