Indeed he did: but even the editor, James Murray, seriously underestimated
the
scope of what he was planning to do.

My favourite book about the OED is _Caught in the Web of Words: James A. H.
Murray and the Oxford English Dictionary_, by Elisabeth K. Murray. Vivid,
very entertaining, a great picture of both James Murray and his (at times!)
long-suffering family (all his children were drafted into sorting the
word-slips for the Dictionary, earning their pocket-money at so much per
slip).
