yet another "me too" post.
I had similar situations at IBM over "executes," "terminates," "invalid,"
"aborts," and the ever favorite "appears."
Supposedly the reason was that these terms could cause difficulty for
translation efforts, because they are words that have multiple non-computing
meanings.
Then there were the never-ending battles about which list items required
periods, and which didnt. And whether "None"s had periods (which got a
chuckle out of a few of us)

A similar thing happened to me. Canadian clients objected to one program
invoking another. Their editor replaced "invokes" with "summons",
