Michele Davis, Andrew Plato, and perhaps others, wrote of having to pay
conference and travel fees for STC conferences at which they were speaking.

I contracted with a conference management company several years ago in the
Washington, DC area. I can assure you that none of the conferences we
produced ever charged speakers a conference fee. In many cases, speakers
also received meals, lodging, and travel. I'm pretty sure that some of the
more well-known speakers commanded honoraria as well. All of our clients
were nonprofit organizations. All of the speakers were given VIP treatment,
with separate registration desks and lounges.
