Bryan,

Perhaps you are correct that "the peacock displays" is an elided form of "the peacock displays his plumage," and is therefore transitive. But I think that what is really happening is created by a rule of inference from the noun phrase, "the peacock's mating display." If I'm correct about this, the verb _displays_ has no object.
