What this Palm Beach ballot debacle emphasizes is the need to bring the
balloting process into the 21st century, stop using those prone-to-error punch
cards, and computerize it. The people who voted early here in Texas used some
sort of computer touch-screen (which I can't properly describe since I didn't
vote early). The rest of us used a scantron-type ballot. If a scantron ballot is
mismarked, it's rejected up front and the voter can get a new ballot to correct
the mistakes.

Some of the counties in Florida (and I presume elsewhere, too) are still using
paper ballots! WHY, fer cryin' out loud, are we using using outmoded technology
in our voting process????? Let's hope this changes before 2004 - and let's also
hope we, as a nation, get rid of the Electoral College so we never again face
the prospect of having a president who lost the popular vote.

And since I'm straying off topic, I'll shut up, pack up my soapbox, and go back
to documenting this software package.....
