This is exactly why I write using a tool that *no one*
else in the company has (FrameMaker), and why I save
all my PDFs with a password for editing rights. Before
I started here, documents were stored anywhere but on
the network, and everyone had their own custom
version, as they borrowed the file from someone else,
modified it, and then sent it out to the customer they
were workig with. The result was about 5 to 20
different versions of the same manual, and not one
core copy.
People didn't like the idea of non-editable
documentation at first, but I made my case very clear.
In order for us to deliver consistent and accurate
information to our customers, all info must go through
some core hub and be distributed from there.
Amazingly, they all understood.
