If I understand correctly, upgrading to the latest and greatest
does not necessarily mean that the worst and oldest is yours to
dispose of. If it's a new version of the same product, then
normally acquiring the upgrade does not mean that you now have
two licenses-- one for the new version, which you can use,
and another for the old version, which you can sell or give away.
On the contrary, giving someone else the old version would be
like making an illegal copy.

(Of course, if you mean changing to different software entirely--
like from WordPerfect to FrameMaker-- that's another kettle of
fishware.)
