Back in the UK, where we don't really call them basements, LG1 (for Lower
Ground), LG2, LG3, etcetera is quite common. Of course, we also designate
the first floor as being the one above the ground floor, so the ground floor
*would* be considered as zero. ;-)

I have seen a few buildings with the basments lettered. The first basement
is "A Level", the second basement is "B Level", etcetera. They could also
be numbered B1, B2, B3, &c. as you descend.

You could give basements negative numbers, but then you'd have to number
the ground floor zero, and everybody but engineers and mathematicians would
be confused. =^>
