Yes, that's the main issue all right.

This whole thread just horrifies me. I can see people feeling that
they have to agree to such invasive behaviour. Our families do need
to eat.

However, I find it almost impossible to see why anyone would imagine
that a company has any right to do this, or that any company that
abuses its employees in such ways might be a desirable employer.

Some people I know boycott such companies -- e.g. I once suggested
that a particular Motorola CPU might be useful in a design a colleague
was working on, and had the idea dismissed out of hand with some rather
colorful comment on Motorola's policies.

I certainly would not consider working for such a company unless I was
desparate and, if I did, I'd feel they'd already forfeited any claim
they might have had for loyalty or fairness in my treatment of them.
"letter of the law" is all they'd get.
