In response to Jim Ramsay's question, I agree completely with what both Reuben
Patterson and Lief Erickson had to say. When faced with several hard to explain
system bugs, I solved some performance issues and a number bugs by increasing
the pagefile size (i.e. VM for windows NT).
Another step I would highly recommend is using Norton Speed Disk to defragment
and optimize your disks. This will make the VM or pagefile one continuous
segment of drive space. Also, directories, dlls, executables, and other often
accessed components are moved to the beginning of the disk increasing access
speed.
If you don't have Norton SD then download it from their web site. The download
is a free trial, so you can optimize your disk and experience the benifits
without having to pay.
