There are a few issues to consider.

1. (not ethical, simply legal): Check your employment contract for what it says about accepting other jobs. It could be that you may need a formal permission from your employer.

2. You are employed for (I assume) 100% by your current employer. Whatever you do, your employer will have absolute priority. That means, that you must make it up with yourself if you can accept that other job, do a good job, and still do a good job for your employer.

3. You will have to decide if your employer and that other company are actually competitors.

The decision is yours. It may be a first start in becoming a contractor, but you might also endanger your current position.

Hope, this can help.

I am employed for a dot.com start-up company as a technical writer. I was
approached by someone who works for another dot.com in my building, to see
if I would be interested in contracting with them for technical writing
work. Is it unethical to consider doing this? I had not sought the work,
and I am happy in my present job, but I must admit I am intrigued at the
notion of contracting, and I'd like to find out more. I'd like to know if
any other Techwhirlers had this situation arise, and how they handled it.
