I asked the question and got a lot of mixed responses:

-Generally, the feeling was that redirects aren't
annoying unless they are constant within a site.
--Rather than redirect, go ahead and give the new URL
whenever possible, since most people update their
bookmarks to the new site to get there directly.
-Redirects can be helpful, especially when search
engines or other sites link to an old site (or if the
site has been at one URL for a long time and has
regular visitors). Again, however, people generally
like to keep the new URL.
-Sites that move around a lot are untrustworthy, so
having a redirect service like Bigfoot immediately
casts a shadow on the site. The same is true if a
person is forced to redirect numerous times.
