This also is a very common error that most engineers make, where they use
multiple terms to mean the same thing, almost the same thing or something
completely different. One of the first things that I always do on a new
assignment is to find out if the company has a defined standard glossary of
technical terms that is used and adhered to throughout the company. Typically,
the answer is no. So I start by defining one term for one object or concept for
the particular project that I am working on.
Engineers may be very precise when it comes to engineering but typically this
does not carry over into technical communication. As a result, there can be many
miscommunications because multiple people may believe that they know what this
technical term means but each one is using a different definition.
