I believe John's wrong about an index not having to be voluminous as long as
a book is well-organized -- because most people only use the manual when
there's something specific they're looking for. And they want to find it
fast in order to get the RTFM session over with ASAP.
Some of us make the mistake of thinking our books are going to be read all
the way through, or even have their entire TOCs looked over. This is the
LAST thing most users want to do.
We have to write manuals as if they'd be read cover to cover, but we always
need to index the heck out of them for greatest customer satisfaction.
