A week or so back, I asked how to migrate Windows preferences files to my
new computer. Here's what I discovered:
- many (but not all) of Word's preferences are stored in normal.dot, but
there are autocorrect entries and dictionary entries you'll have to go
hunting elsewhere in the MSOffice folders.
- Internet Explorer 5 stores its favorites (aka "bookmarks") in
c/windows/favorites.
If you've established a user profile (i.e., you log into your computer when
Windows boots up), Dan Hall suggested that you can establish a profile, and
copy that to the new machine (the files are stored in c/windows/profiles).
You can set up a profile if you don't have one by using the Users Control
panel. Dan also pointed out that in Outlook, the File->export/import
approach should capture some of your settings for Outlook, such as your
personal address book.
