summarizes relevant research and gives the bibliographic references.
Appendix C is specifically about on-line documents.

(My take on the studies I've seen:
1. Serif vs. sans serif is just one among many factors in font design
that affect readability, usability and reading speed.
2. As has been mentioned on this list, there may be times when we want
to slow the reader's speed.
3. Also, everything depends on the size and resolution of the
end-user's display. Good luck defining that for the Web.)
