Your many and various opinions are sought.

We have a hardware/firmware/software product,
and we have a software utility that is used
to initialize and maintain the product. In my
manual, I had explained initialization steps
and requirements by reference to the utility
program. That was the command-line/console
version. Then, they wrote a (barely) GUI version.

I say keep 'em both, because there are people who
will always like command-line interfaces better, and
there are others who will always prefer a GUI version.

Unless you know that your audience has only one
of these types, and will never have the other, then
removing either version does a great disservice to
a segment of your audience.

If you've explained clearly at the outset that there
are two versions, and that the major difference is
the interface, then people will choose their approach.
You can't force them to read the other version, but
the "curious and dedicated" you mention are bound
to look at it some time, and might learn something
important from it.

If you have the final say, I believe it's worth
arguing to keep both versions.
