My team makes technology papers and briefs for use in our global field
sites, see?
But the tricky part is that there is often (usually) wild variation in SKU,
preload, etc., frequently even position and segment within a single
product.
They MUST have files they can, at least, take chunks out of. Often they
need to localise language and other stuff, too.
Consequently, unlike our brothers downstairs in Manuals who ARE lucky
enough to be able to use Frame, we have to build in MS Word.
Naturally, we post all our documents in both .DOC and .PDF formats, but
there's actually a push right now to stop offering the .PDF format.
Of course, the whole deal is sweetened even more by throwing in the fact
that our corp-wide VI is based around a Purchased Font. You can see where
this is going, right?
Sure and a goodly portion of the field sites haven't installed the font,
see? In fact, a goodly portion don't even know HOW to install the font.
Embedding creates a file size I'd like to avoid, especially since they're
supposed to have it anyway, and then, of course, we start getting emails
complaining that there are formatting problems, because they're getting the
doc in Arial rather than the one it was formatted in, yadda yadda yadda....
And I say, you know, this is why people like .PDF files.
And then they say (return to line 4 of this posting and read again,
repeating until cocktail time...)
So there's all kinds of other reasons why working in Frame may be
unreachable.
