TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
About a dozen years ago, I was part of a project at the Xerox El
Segundo, California campus that resulted in what was perhaps the first
use of digital photography for hardware service documentation.
>From that experience, I found that fairly straightforward use of
photography with some manipulation to highlight the parts involved can
be much more useful to end users than all the isometric drawings you
might find.
Similarly, I believe that the three dimension rendering programs that
can transform the line drawings to full representations makes sense
for those hardware items that do not yet exist.
Obviously, there is still room for other kinds of drawings...but the
closer we can get to what the user will see in front of him, I
believe, the easier it will be to use.
