I have 'edited' Michael's email, only to keep the
pertinent information
> .... understanding of electronics, radio communications,
> microwave communications, and satellite communications
What about telephony (telephone), teletype, sensors, et al?
Definition of "Telecom" -- It is all of the Above:
I don't know of any definitive book, or scholarly work
that can give you a 'straight' (chuckle, chuckle) answer.
It is like being a doctor - and then you are a specialist.
Ma Bell is a telecommunications company -- local, long distance,
submarine cable, video, cable, etc.
It is getting to where you need to spell-out --
For example, you could say
"Telecommunications primary area of expertise - Telephony,
also knowledgeable in data, video, and yada yada yada."
There is a 'trade' magazine that is titled "Telecommunications"
and it does NOT cover all of the field.
I hope this helps you. I have been involved in the
'telecommunications' business for a 'long' time, and I
can't give you a good definition.
