Actually, if you're using Word, there's another method, which involves a
little less work. You just have to press Ctrl and some character, then a
letter key, and you'll get an accented letter. To wit:

Ctrl+',letter = letter with acute accent
Ctrl+`,letter = letter with grave accent
Ctrl+Shift+6 = letter with circumflex
Crtl+Shift+:,letter = letter with umlauts
Ctrl+, (comma),letter = letter with cedilla
Ctrl+Shift+`,letter = letter with tilde (as in 'El Nino')
Ctrl+/,letter = letter with slash through it

I can't think of the shortcuts for other accents (haceks, macrons, etc.)
offhand.
