Tony Markatos says:

In software, another (common) way of saying that of saying that we are "decomposing" a system is to say that we are "partitioning" the system. A major task of a systems analyst is to partition the system into "right-sized" chunks - where "right-size" is determined by evaluating the interface complexity between the "pieces".

Note: Many Technical Writers use the term "chunking". To my understanding, decomposing=partitioning=chunking.

Nancy McGough asked:

I just today was trying to figure out a better word for
deconstruct/decompose/disect. I looked all these up in
dictionaries and thesauruses and still haven't figured out a
better word than "decompose." .......
