        ** Background**
                Our company develops, sells, and supports PC-based software.
Technical writers belong to the Help Systems Development (HSD) department,
which in turn belongs to the Development group.
                Historically, the Development group has not been consistent
in its use of product requirements and specifications documents.
                The company is also making a transition from a
Development-driven to Marketing-driven development effort.
        **Definitions**
        Product Requirements: Developed by Marketing, explains why the
product is being developed, its audience, and its objectives (what it's
supposed to do).
        Product Specifications: Developed by Development, explains how the
product will meet the requirements identified by Marketing.
        **Problem**
                In order to produce quality materials, HSD needs access to
accurate and consistent Product Requirements and Product Specifications. We
don't have any. We need templates for Product Requirements and Product
Specifications.
        **How you can help**
                HSD's objective is to work with Marketing, Development, and
Quality Assurance to develop templates.
                We'd appreciate any assistance, on or off the list, in the
form of suggestions for or samples of Product Requirement or Product Spec
templates used by you or your company.
