Microsoft distributes a utility called Word Viewer that acts like a PDF
viewer program. It is probably freely distributable, as it is free on their
website.
Here's what I would do:
If your setup program is on the same CD as your docs, have the setup install
WordViewer (if possible), and change a registry key on their system so that
Word Viewer becomes the default opener of documents with a Word 6 or 97
*.rtf (or some other non-doc or dot file).
If it's just docs on the CD, include Word Viewer. Do the same
registry-altering thing, or get a programmer to code that the docs run from
the program on the CD (whatever! it's just an idea!).
Then make sure your documents are as locked as they can be, in case the user
opens it up in Word after all.
