Bonnie,

Are you talking about learning how to use Access to simply work in an
existing database, or do you mean learning how to *create* and use an
Access database (create relational data tables, write SQL statements,
queries, and reports)?

The former is a piece of cake. The latter depends on how well the
people in question *get* the concept of a relational database in the
first place and how quickly they can pick up whatever they need to
learn.

Also take into consideration the scope of the project... Is it
relatively small or is it something that encompasses a whole hacking lot
of data that will need to be worked with in many different ways? This
makes a big difference in the amount of time to plan for as well.

Ultimately, it's just like any other tool. How long would you expect
it would take them to learn Word or Frame if you want them to be able to
write a letter using the tool? A User Manual? A 20-volume,
cross-referenced, completely indexed documentation set that you also
then want PDF'ed, bookmarked, and converted into HTML all with a
matching online help system? Get my point?

Most computer training centers and community colleges offer a range of
Access classes to get people up and running. As a bonus tip, for expert
help in building databases, turn to the Access listserv. These people
are awesome and very helpful:

Send an email to LISTSERV -at- PEACH -dot- EASE -dot- LSOFT -dot- COM
In the BODY (not the subject) of the email, type SUBSCRIBE ACCESS-L

Good luck,
Alex

Two editors in my group need to learn ACCESS. Can anyone who has worked
with this program estimate the time frame required for becoming
competent in using it?

I am attempting to determine if management's ideas about learning this
program are realistic.
