Just saw Mary Choy's message from July 8. In case you haven't received an
answer:

Microsoft Word styles can be automatically updated. To turn this feature on
or off:
Click Format
Click Style
Click Modify
Click the Automatic Update checkbox on, or off, as you desire.

If you leave the box checked, any changes you make to a paragraph formatted
by a style instantly become part of that style. Because of this, a single
change to one formatted paragraph can have repurcussions throughout your
document...and any future documents using this same style.

I prefer to leave the box unchecked.
