In the past I've worked for a large company in which we technical
writers were co-located with other publications personnel, but several
miles from our 'SMEs' and the equipment. We had desk top publishing
connected to servers (Xerox Star), and shared files with others on the
project. While we could interact with other writers on the program,
it was a phone call or short drive to meet with engineers or actually
see the equipment. Not too different from telecommuting.

My only concern would be how to verify that I am working a full 8
hours. one way would be to work on a piecework basis, with a draw
against a payment amount. However if we are delayed by things not
under our control (slipping manufacturing dates, unexpected last
minute changes in the designs), how could we be compensated for them.

To leave it as just a salary with no ties to productivity is OK, but I
am not sure the employer would approve. (After all, thjere is no real
way we can see productivity in the office except by product.)
