Here's some more info. about site search engines, following up on Michael Collier's request from yesterday.

Note: Choosing search technology for my little unfunded intranet site is driven by these considerations:
1. Must be royalty-free (and not eat up too many hours of my time!).
2. Must enable intranet searches from inside the firewall (no remotely hosted solutions).
3. No Java.

Yesterday Tobias Hofmann suggested http://www.searchtools.com/, which is a treasure trove of information.

There's also http://searchenginewatch.internet.com/resources/software.html, another good source.

Janet Valade wrote to say she likes AltaVista Search Intranet V2.3. I couldn't find this on the AV website; anybody have any info.?

http://www.webreference.com/dev/dndcgi/start.html - ICE, a Perl-based web site search engine

http://www.htdig.org/ - ht://Dig, released under the GNU public license

http://www.lycos.com/software/software-intranet.html - Lycos Site Spider (free, or you can go for the beefed-up version, DB/Text WebPublisher, which costs)

http://www.webreference.com/perl/ - Info. about "Perlhoo," which creates a simple Yahooesque directory in less than 100 lines of code

http://www.prc.dk/user-friendly-manuals/ufm/tip-search.htm - Peter Ring's modification of the JavaScript search engine 123Search (http://www.toao.com/software/123search/). See http://listserv.okstate.edu/CGI/WA.EXE?A2=ind9903D&L=techwr-l&P=R5469&m=51843 for info.

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/C_and_C++/Searching/Searching_Your_Web_Site/ - from the CGI Resource Index

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Searching/Searching_Your_Web_Site/ - also from the CGI Resource Index

http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Remotely_Hosted/Searching_Your_Web_Site/ - again, from the CGI Resource Index--remotely hosted solutions (may not work if your pages are inside a firewall)

Sorry if any of this is redundant. I'm on digest and haven't seen today's posts yet.
