Why use pronouns at all?

Consider the following

A) To create an airtight seal between the gromet and the flange, put the
product together in a vacuum

B) At the C:\ prompt, type FORMAT C:

C) When the "Are you a total moron?" dialog box appears, type Yes in the
text box, then press ENTER<--

OK, so it's not my best writing ever, but you get the point. Although some
people feel this is impersonal, and alienates the user, it is a viable
alternative to gender-specific language.
