Nope, I haven't found a good replacement. I use the plural, also, to cut down
on the amount of annoying "he or she."

An acceptable, although far from universal, form is "s/he." I use it sparingly
cuz it's still in the chicken-egg stage: until it becomes more widely used, it
slows down the reader; conversely, it won't become widely used unless . . ..
