I disagree with the assessment of this time as non-productive. The
people with whom I talk to about that stuff are the people I need to get
information from. I make it a point to hang around them to some degree.
In my previous job, I learned the product by going and hanging around
the developers. I'd make it a point once or twice a day to pop in. If
nothing was going on, I'd chat with them a little and leave. But every
so often, they'd be going over things about how the product worked (it
was a complex product). I'd listen and ask questions, and eventually, I
understood. I also created a solid relationship with them and that
helped a lot at review time.
