I have to agree with Win Day on this. Part of the issue is that you got
this job through a friend. Are you really the best qualified? Are you
asking the company to pay you to get up to speed when someone more qualified
could walk in ready to go?

A further clarification. In my situation (a permanent job), I knew a lot
about database theory and "technology" going in. But the employer, in
addition to having their own database product, had actually developed an
entirely new method for dealing with data--a new database model that they
had patented and were developing in several different directions. If I
chose to hire someone to help me with documentation, I'd be looking for
someone who already knew a lot about common database topics or (if the
writer was someone I trusted and felt good about working with) was willing
to learn on their own time. I would, however, pay them to read the patents
and all the theoretical papers we've produced, to read on other technologies
that have unexpected relationships to our database model, and of course to
learn about our product.
