See http://www.geocities.com/Area51/6793/helpsurv.htm

It's out of date as far as HTML help goes, but it's a good place for a
beginner.

A couple of things to note:

- Creating help doesn't require programming. You just have to manipulate
Word footnotes, and get educated about how to compile help. Complex and
arcane, yes, but you're not dealing with algorithms and programming
languages. Much easier than that.

- In addition to the big expensive help authoring tools, there are many
cheap, even free help authoring utilities. If you don't have a corporate
budget at your disposal, many of these work just fine. (For the price!)
