In the beginning of the PC era, some companies designed their
manuals in such a way that essential information was conveyed by color. The
goal was to make the xeroxed manuals of software pirates useless. For a
long time, I assumed color in manuals was for that purpose. However, I have
gotten over that bias.

In pondering my current problem of including information for more
than one product in one manual, I thought color hints for the info that was
for a specific product only would be the clearest organization. However, we
really can't afford color, so I will have to design another way to indicate
the product-specific info without drawing the eye away from the info that is
for all products.
