Although Apple's manuals may not have the detailed troubleshooting that you want, they do provide very extensive troubleshooting tips in the form of articles in their Tech Info Library (TIL) http://til.info.apple.com/

The articles in the TIL are also written by technical writers, but these are a different group than those who write the manuals. The TIL writers are in closer consultation with the field and technical support folks, and I think they are better geared towards what people really need.

Why don't the two groups of writers get together to combine the info in the manuals and the TIL? Interesting question, and one with a very, very long explanation that I won't get into here. But, there was one combined effort beginning with Mac OS 8--the Mac OS Info Center.

I got my start as a technical writer writing for the TIL at Apple so I know all too well about all these things....
