First, pick a style guide.
Second, do whatever it says to do.

When left to my own devices, I use any available
corporate style guide, then an appropriate subject
specific style guide (Read Me First: A Style Guide
for the Computer Industry, MS Manual of Style, or
whatever), then defer to the Chicago Manual of Style
for anything not previously addressed.

Opinions -- anyone's -- on this topic aren't nearly as
valuable as a substantive reference resource that can
answer this and many other questions. (Many of these
other questions also pop up regularly on TECHWR-L).
