The only rule is that in published documents, you must honor copyrights and
trademarks, according to the law that applies to them. In the case of
copyrights, you must not republish unless you have the consent of the copyright
owner. Usually this is simply accomplished by writing the publisher and
requesting permission; you'll probably get it but be asked to give credit in a
particular way and to send the publisher a copy of the instance. In the case of
trademarks, you must acknowledge the owner of the trademark, with language
along the lines of "xyz is the trademark [or service mark] of Enormous Corp."
Most technical manuals cover the whole trademark/copyright issue with a page or
two up front, right behind the cover. But there's no law stating that's where
it goes.
