Has anyone gone through the process of setting up as an SGML publishing
group?

I am working with a company that wants to create online documents for its
software products. At this point, they are very project driven and so the
software varies slightly from client to client. In fact I expect this will
always be the case because of how they market the software. This has meant
that the user manuals will have a combination of base information mixed
with customer specific content.

I would like to know:

- whether you find that SGML is an effective tool for creating online
documents and for dealing with content sharing
- have you used any other tool than SGML for addressing a similar situation
- an estimate regarding the time it will take to get up and running (i.e.,
what is the average time to create a DTD)
- editing tools that you have found work very well
- pitfalls with SGML (i.e., is it difficult to maintain)

I have worked with SGML before, however my exposure has only been on the
editing side. I don't have a good sense of what is all involved with
setting up SGML and making it work. I did notice that there were continual
problems with getting books printed and with changes that were made to the
FOSI. We are not in a position to have a full time person available to
support SGML.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
