From what I've seen on techwr-l, the successful writers without degrees
fit into a few categories:

-- Some have so much experience (possibly because they started writing
before it occured to anyone to require a degree) that only an idiot
would look at their resumes and say "but we can't hire you; you don't
have a degree!"

-- Some started in a position that did not require a degree and worked
their way into technical writing, through official or unofficial means.

-- Some live in areas where degreed writers are few and far between, so
it's not an expectation most employers have.

Any others?

Please note that I'm not saying anyone needs a degree, just that some
employers think so.
