TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Anonymous asked about letting one's boss know you're job hunting.
Tom Johnson came forward with the truism of techwr-l "it
depends/know your audience." I think in this case it's pretty
easy to qualify what it depends on: Trust.
I could trust my bosses with information like that. However,
IMHO, the boss that blew up and demoralized a new employee isn't
a good candidate for trust.
(Slightly off-topic: Did anyone read about the technical writer
who donated a kidney to her boss? The article quoted her as
saying "He's just such a great person to work for." Not that I'm
ready to fill out a donor card on my next job application, but
I'd sure rather work for someone I regarded as a great person
than work for a
bully.)
