As many as there are synonyms your target audience is likely to use, that
differ in the first few letters. There is no specific number, not even a
rough guide.
An index is a binary search - doubling the number of entries adds a single
step (and it is a tiny step) to the user's task in the worst case. Searching
for a word that doesn't exist adds much more. So when in doubt, add that
synonym.
