You heard correctly. The FrameMaker document must have the same style tags as the Word document in order for the conversion to go more smoothly. Even then, however, it is not a process that is free of glitches.

Following is some advice based on my experience with document conversions:

* Tables convert well, though only in the most plain-vanilla version: no fancy formatting (such as borderless columns) carries over. This is true whether the fancy table is in Word or Frame. Expect to spend a lot of time reformatting tables.

* In Word, remove the automatic numbering from numbered lists prior to importing into Frame. I've found in the long run it saves me a lot of work. The same goes for bulleted lists. In Frame the bullet or numbering is properly applied. If you have many numbered lists, you'll need to apply the "1" style (Step1, ListNumber1, whatever else you may call it) in the Frame document to whatever line you want numbering to start at one.

* Word 97 (Word 8.0) files cannot be imported into Frame. You must save the it either as an RTF file, or as a Word 6.0/7.0 document first.

* For style lists: the Word templates I create have examples of every style available. Thus when I print the styles list, all paragraph and character formats are listed.
