Scott Holstad wondered about his current job situation. Scott, I
strongly suspect that the "great situation" you've got isn't nearly
as great as you make it sound. Among other things, working 88 days
without a break and 10-15 hour days? <shudder> If you really love the
work, then you owe it to yourself to sit down with the manager of the
day and politely but firmly remind him that based on the written
company policy, you've missed two merit appraisals so far and that
you want the problem resolved ASAP, with back pay and interest.
(Set a date for resolving the problem rather than just accepting a
"real soon now" promise.) You also need to point out that if you've
been working a 15-hour day for any length of time, that means they
should be hiring another full-time employee so that each of you can
work an average 7.5-hour day. Quality will go up, and you'll be
around for a few more years rather than up and leaving. Don't
threaten, btw, but do mention that it's no longer something you're
willing to do.

If you can't fix either of these problems, then maybe it _is_ time to
jump. Just remember that old line that "the grass is always greener
on the other side of the fence". I'd be surprised if you couldn't
find an equally challenging job elsewhere with far better working
conditions, but take a long, hard look at any offers you do receive;
there's also a lot of crabgrass out there.
