I know of an organization where a supervisor recruited an employee to do some
outside work. The employee ended up being reprimanded because the work
violated the organization's policy on outside employment. The fact that the
employee was actually recruited by the supervisor (who was, in fact,
responsible for enforcing the policy) wasn't considered an excuse. The
supervisor was also reprimanded, but it was cold comfort to the employee, who
had been assured everything was above-board. The moral of this story is: if
you decide to take advantage of the moonlighting opportunity, don't rely on
your supervisor's approval -- make sure you are also complying with any
written policies.
