An Oscar Mayer personnel manager once said, "The best time to look for work
is while you're employed," the implication being that prospective employers
would rather NOT hire someone who >>may<< have foolishly quit, been fired,
or "let go" for whatever reason.

Regarding "calling the others back," few return to the place of pain. If
the company has a bad financial record for whatever reason, the wise tend
to keep their distance. Many moons ago, when companies offered pensions
(remember those?), laid off workers were wise to return when invited. For
the most part (and I don't know whose quote this is), no one is so unique
or indispensable that they can't be replaced.

Life's what happens while you're busy making other plans.
