Depends on where and when you're looking. There are usually "lists of
qualified applicants" kept ad hoc by landlords when they have something
to rent. For some apartments with nice amenities, there can be waiting
lists, and they DO check credit and references.
When you're moving into this area from outside, you can usually find
motels with weekly rates, or furnished apartments available by the week,
to serve as interim housing while you look for something more
permanent. Many companies will help the auslander look for housing,
lining up resources and other things that will make househunting more
efficient. There are also some apartment-finding services, and as with
anywhere, some are better than others.
When we hire auslanders, we make sure the housing pages on our intranet
are up to date, and usually a couple of our people will provide advice
and assistance just to be helpful. I think we're fairly typical.
