I should emphasize Bob's point about commutes. The prices he quotes for
his own neighborhood make me guess it's in the East Bay; many of the
high tech firms are on the other side of the bay on the Peninsula, an
area that features the high prices/rents one generally hears about. If
you're willing to commute in heavy traffic, you can get better prices
but the traffic is getting worse every day.
