I asked for some input, and received some good ideas, which I incorporated
into the job description I submitted to my client. So thanks for all the
help. Here's the draft:
Job Description for Intranet Manager
The Intranet Manager is responsible for the overall content and
functionality of the Company Intranet. He or she directs how content will
be arranged; how graphics will look; and how scripts interact with content
and other media, including databases and multimedia presentations. In
particular, the Intranet Manager will be responsible for the following:
PLANNING
Study, with the assistance of the Company Communications Coordinator, the
flow of information between departments and groups within the organization,
and identify new content for Intranet distribution.
Plan and direct the overall Intranet structure and design, including server
configuration (in coordination with IS), deployment scheduling, version
control, and testing procedures.
Coordinate flow of information from the Company to the Intranet with the
Company Communications Coordinator.
INFRASTRUCTURE AND STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT
Develop supportive infrastructure (e.g., standards, templates, directory
structures) for content creation and distribution.
Work with the other members of the Intranet team to ensure the
integrity of the information provided on all web pages. This includes
editing all final HTML submissions for grammar, consistency of terminology,
visual congruity, proper coding, confidentiality, and controlled information
use.
Manage the web page content and layout, resulting in a user-friendly design
and ease of navigation.
DIRECT SUPPORT
Receive content from various departments and review for consistency,
accuracy, and propriety.
Work with groups who have identified content that they want to place on the
Intranet and help them realize their goals.
Maintain password-protected web pages and implement editing access
security to server files.
Maintain the file structure on the Intranet server.
Provide consulting and support services for using the Intranet web
site and available web browser software.
TRAINING
Plan and produce training materials as needed.
Assess the need for, and arrange and/or conduct training for Departmental
representatives (who provide content from their departments).
TECHNICAL COORDINATION
Work closely with the IS department and web application developers within
the organization to ensure the continuation of a common, stable development
environment for web authors.
PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
Manage and supervise HTML editors, writers and/or graphic artists, and other
personnel under his or her direct supervision.
Plan and program staff additions and/or changes as needed.
Desired Qualifications for Intranet Manager:
Knowledge and skill in one or more of the following areas:
* Web site structure and design, including NT networks and Internet
Information Server.
* HTML and web page content and design, including use of FrontPage 98
and other Internet utilities.
* Knowledge of information design and layout principles.
* Ability to manage people in a fast-paced environment.
* Knowledge of release strategies and workflow models, including
project management.
* Strong editing and writing skills.
* Working knowledge of trademark and copyright laws.
* Understanding of corporate communications and how an Intranet fits
into an overall communications strategy.
